Leave a Mac or Windows PC at home, plugged in and connected to the internet. It keeps your projects, files, tools and ChatGPT desktop setup running while you control the work from your phone.
Your phone controls the conversation. Your computer still does the work.
What this setup gives you
Open ChatGPT on your phone and you can:
- Access ChatGPT Work or Codex on your computer.
- Start tasks, answer questions and approve actions.
- Review screenshots, terminal output, tests and file changes.
- Tap Voice inside Remote and speak directly to the active Work or Codex session.
You do not need Tailscale, Remote Desktop or router port forwarding. ChatGPT Remote handles the connection.
What you need
- A Mac or Windows PC that can stay plugged in.
- The latest ChatGPT desktop app.
- The latest ChatGPT app on iPhone or Android.
- The same ChatGPT account and workspace on both devices.
- A reliable internet connection.
Step 1: Update both apps
On your computer:
- Download or update ChatGPT from chatgpt.com/download.
- Open it and sign in.
- Check that you can select ChatGPT or Codex from the top-left menu.
On your phone:
- Update ChatGPT through the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in with the same account and workspace.
Step 2: Prepare your project
On the computer, open the Work or Codex project you want to reach remotely.
Run a safe test first:
Read this project and tell me what it contains. Do not change anything.
If you want ChatGPT to control desktop apps or a browser, open Plugins > Computer Use and enable it. On Mac, allow Screen Recording and Accessibility when prompted.
Step 3: Connect your phone
On the computer:
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Select Set up Remote in the sidebar.
- A QR code will appear.
On the phone:
- Scan the QR code.
- Let it open in ChatGPT.
- Confirm the same account and workspace.
- Complete any passkey or multi-factor authentication check.
- Wait for the computer to appear under Remote.
Step 4: Stop the computer from sleeping
On the computer, open Settings > Connections.
- Turn on Allow connections.
- Turn on Keep this computer awake.
- Leave the computer plugged in, online and signed into ChatGPT.
- Leave the ChatGPT desktop app running.
The display can turn off. The computer itself cannot sleep.
For a Mac laptop, leave the lid open while it is plugged in. For Windows Computer Use, leave the desktop unlocked so ChatGPT can operate visible apps.
Step 5: Use Work, Codex and Voice from your phone
- Open the ChatGPT phone app.
- Tap Remote in the side menu.
- Select your connected computer.
- Open an existing Work or Codex thread, or start a new one.
- Type an instruction or tap Voice.
- Speak normally. You can interrupt, redirect the task and approve actions from the phone.
The Voice button inside Remote talks to the remote Work or Codex session. You do not need a separate remote desktop app.
Step 6: Test it away from home
Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone so it uses mobile data.
- Open Remote.
- Select the computer and project.
- Tap Voice.
- Ask: "Which computer and project are you connected to? Do not change anything."
- Start one small task.
- Approve one safe action.
- Confirm you can see the result on your phone.
Do this before relying on the setup outside the house.
A first prompt to copy
Brief me on this project in five bullets. Tell me what is unfinished. Recommend one safe next step, explain what you will change, then wait for my approval before starting.
Keep approval gates for deletions, publishing, payments, messages, credentials and production changes.
Quick security check
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for ChatGPT.
- Review paired devices under Settings > Connections.
- Remove any phone or computer you no longer use.
- Give Work and Codex access only to the files and apps they need.
- Keep approvals on for destructive or external actions.
If it does not work
Remote is missing: update both apps and confirm both use the same account and workspace.
The computer is offline: wake it, check its internet connection, open ChatGPT and confirm Allow connections is on.
The project is missing: check that you selected the correct computer under Remote and that the project exists in the desktop app.
Voice is missing: open the thread through the Remote side tab first, then look for the Voice control inside that remote session.
The point
The useful part is not putting ChatGPT on another screen. It is giving one computer a permanent working environment, then keeping yourself close enough to direct it from anywhere.
Your computer holds the capability. Your phone keeps the work moving.
